Teachers’ union KUPPET Secretary Akelo Misori has stated that the strike will continue. The strike which begun on Monday has been extended despite a Labour Court order on Tuesday to halt the action.
Mr. Misori revealed that KUPPET had already begun talks on the return-to-work formula with Labour CS Alfred Mutua before TSC moved to court putting the talks in jeopardy.
“The court talked about the intended strike, yet the strike had already begun. TSC went to court on Tuesday when the strike had already begun so we cannot call it off on the basis of those orders,” Misori said.
Misori vowed that teachers will not back down.
Justice James Rika of the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi issued the orders on Tuesday suspending the post-primary education teachers’ strike called by KUPPET pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the Teachers Service Commission. He certified the petition by the Teachers Service Commission as urgent.
The CS for Education Julius Ogamba said the ministry appreciates the vital efforts teachers put in the education ecosystem and cannot take them for granted adding their matters will be taken into consideration.
He further insisted that, seamless operation in schools is critical, particularly this term as learners and more so candidates prepare for national assessments and examination.
“This is why, as a government, we will do all we can to improve their terms and conditions of service. Already, resources have been provided for the implementation of the 2021–25 Collective Bargaining Agreement,” Ogamba said
