Kenya Met forecasts rain through March 23, with heavier showers from Thursday

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across several parts of the country between March 17 and March 23, 2026. The agency says the intensity is expected to increase from Thursday.

In its weekly weather outlook, Kenya Met said showers will affect the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coastal region.

Some locations in these areas could also see isolated heavy rainfall events during the week.

Where Kenya Met rainfall is expected this week

Kenya Met said rainfall is expected in multiple regions as the country transitions into the March–May long rains season. This period typically brings higher precipitation in several parts of Kenya.

In a post on its official X account, the agency listed the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coastal region among the areas likely to receive rain.

However, not all regions are expected to be wet.

Drier conditions likely in the northeast and northwest

Kenya Met said parts of northeastern and northwestern Kenya are likely to remain mostly sunny and dry during the forecast period.

Even so, the department cautioned that occasional rainfall cannot be ruled out completely in those areas.

Temperatures to vary widely across the country

Alongside the rainfall outlook, Kenya Met highlighted temperature differences expected across regions.

Daytime temperatures above 30°C are forecast in several areas, including the Coast and parts of northeastern and northwestern Kenya. These places are expected to remain warm to hot during the day for most of the week.

In contrast, colder nights are expected in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and sections of the North Rift. According to Kenya Met, nighttime temperatures in these areas could drop below 10°C.

Cold nighttime conditions are also expected in locations near Mount Kilimanjaro, where temperatures often fall due to altitude and local weather patterns.

How to keep up with daily updates

Kenya Met advised residents to keep checking its official platforms for updates, including daily and county-specific forecasts.

The department said it shares weather information through its website, county forecasts, and the FASTA-Ken weather application, which provides real-time conditions across different parts of the country.

With the long rains season building, Kenya Met says rainfall will remain a dominant feature across much of Kenya from March 17 to March 23, with heavier showers more likely from Thursday
