Kenya’s Soldiers in Somalia Deserve More Than a General’s Visit — But It’s a Start

There are Kenyan soldiers right now in Kismayo, Somalia, far from their families, operating in one of the continent’s most dangerous conflict zones. On October 16, their top brass finally showed up — and what happened next tells you something important about how Kenya manages its military commitments abroad.

Major General Luka Kutto, the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, flew into Kismayo to assess the operational environment and check on Kenyan troops deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). He was received by Colonel Daniel Musau, the Deputy Commander of Sector 2, and spent time engaging directly with personnel on the ground.

Here is the truth that official statements tend to soften: Kenya’s soldiers in Somalia carry a burden most of us never think about, and the institutional machinery that sends them there owes them more than commemorations and carefully worded press releases. A general’s visit matters — but only if the insights he gathers translate into real improvements in how these troops are supported, equipped and eventually brought home.

Watch this space. The quality of Kenya’s commitment to AUSSOM will be judged not by the rank of who visits Kismayo, but by what changes after the general’s plane lands back in Nairobi.
