US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has travelled to Europe to lead the US delegation at the Munich Security Conference, describing the moment as defining and saying geopolitics has entered a \u201cnew era\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rubio spoke to reporters before arriving in Germany, as European leaders sought clarity on Washington\u2019s priorities and its approach to Nato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Munich Security Conference is expected to draw more than 70 leaders and senior officials, alongside lawmakers and security officials. The agenda includes European defence, the transatlantic relationship, and the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, participants plan to discuss wider security pressures, including China and Iran-related diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tensions have risen after President Donald Trump said the United States should annex Greenland and described the territory as important to US security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she planned to meet Rubio during the conference to address the issue. She has also urged Europe to adopt an \u201cemergency mindset\u201d and strengthen its capacity to defend itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
French President Emmanuel Macron has argued that Europe should prepare for greater strategic independence from the United States. Meanwhile, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte has stressed the importance of transatlantic unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
German officials have also pushed for a common message. They want to show that Europe and the United States still need each other inside Nato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
