At least three police officers from Kenya\u2019s General Service Unit were injured after an Improvised Explosive Device attack in Fafi Subcounty, Garissa County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the blast happened at about 6:33 am on February 23, 2026, in the Harbole area. The attackers are believed to be al-Shabaab militants operating in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officers from the GSU Fafi Operations Camp were heading out to look for water using a water bowser. A water bowser is a truck used to transport water, often in remote areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the vehicle hit an underground IED. An IED is a home-made bomb planted to detonate when a target passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The device had been dug into the road. It exploded as the bowser drove over it. The blast extensively damaged the engine section, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three officers on board were injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the team was under escort by a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, known as an MRAP. An MRAP is an armoured vehicle designed to withstand roadside bombs and ambushes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The MRAP, identified as 5170, responded immediately. It helped secure the scene and supported the rescue operation, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The injured officers were taken to a nearby dispensary for first aid and stabilisation. They were awaiting airlift to Nairobi for specialised treatment, police added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Security agencies have since stepped up operations in the area as investigations continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fafi is close to the Kenya\u2013Somalia border. The border is widely described by security officials as porous, making cross-border movement easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the area is under a multi-agency operation. That means several security units are working together on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the push aims to flush out militants and reduce attacks. In recent months, however, the wider region has continued to face terror-related incidents, keeping security teams on high alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
