South Africa’s Electoral Commission (IEC) is putting political parties on notice: stop using our name, our logo, and our brand to deceive voters. With the 2026 Local Government Elections<\/strong> approaching on 4 November<\/strong>, the IEC has flagged a disturbing trend of parties and candidates plastering official election branding on campaign material \u2014 creating the false impression that the IEC endorses them.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n It doesn’t. And it never will. That’s the entire point.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Parties, independent candidates, and their campaign teams have been caught using the IEC’s intellectual property \u2014 its name, logo, and official designs \u2014 in election campaign material. This isn’t a grey area. It is a direct violation of the Electoral Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The IEC is constitutionally mandated to run free and fair elections. It does not back any party. It does not campaign for any candidate. When a party slaps the IEC logo on their posters, they are lying to you \u2014 the voter.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Section 21A of the Electoral Commission Act<\/strong> expressly bans anyone from using:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Violations aren’t just unethical \u2014 they carry real legal consequences. The Commission has explicitly reserved the right to take legal and regulatory action<\/strong> against anyone found in breach.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n This is about more than branding. When a political party borrows the IEC’s credibility to boost their own image, they are undermining the one institution that is supposed to protect your vote from manipulation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Impartiality isn’t just a buzzword \u2014 it is the foundation of a legitimate election. Erode it, and you erode trust in the entire democratic process. In a country where voter cynicism is already dangerously high, this kind of manipulation is not a minor infraction. It is a threat to democracy itself.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The Commission has made clear it will actively monitor compliance<\/strong> as the country moves toward the 2026 elections.
