The vote is still months away, but the battle lines are already drawn, and the outcome will shape whether Somalia inches closer to stability or slides back into the chaos that has defined too much of its recent history.

This is not an abstract geopolitical story. Somalia shares a border with Kenya. Its instability has long bled across that border in the form of Al-Shabaab attacks, refugee crises, and regional insecurity that Nairobi has spent years trying to manage. What happens in Mogadishu does not stay in Mogadishu. Young Kenyans who have watched their government pour resources into fighting a war that partly originates from Somali dysfunction should care deeply about who ends up in Villa Somalia.

The Candidates and What They Actually Represent

Farmaajo is the nationalist. His presidency was defined by a fierce insistence on Somali sovereignty and a drive to build a powerful central government that could actually govern the whole country, not just its capital. His supporters say that vision is exactly what Somalia needs to crush Al-Shabaab once and for all. His critics — and there are many — say he spent his tenure picking fights with regional administrations, fracturing the federal structure that Somalia desperately needs to hold itself together. He is polarising, and he knows it, and he does not seem to care.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed plays the long game differently. He built his reputation on dialogue, on pulling rival factions into the same room and keeping them talking long enough to prevent bloodshed. During his presidency he was credited with shepherding Somalia through one of its most fragile political transitions, keeping international partners engaged while managing the impossible internal politics of a fractured nation. He is the consensus candidate, the man people turn to when they need someone everyone can tolerate. Whether that is a strength or a limitation depends entirely on what Somalia needs next.

Saacid is the technocrat in the race, a former prime minister who has built his campaign on the unglamorous but essential work of governance reform, fiscal management and private-sector development. He understands the machinery of the state. The problem is that Somalia’s presidential election is not a popular vote — it is an indirect election in which lawmakers choose the head of state, which means winning requires political alliances, regional deals and the kind of backroom negotiation that does not always reward the most competent candidate. Saacid’s real test is whether he can translate policy credibility into political muscle.

Then there is Fiqi, the outsider, a businessman who has never held high office and is betting that Somalia’s voters — or rather, Somalia’s lawmakers — are tired enough of the political class to take a chance on someone from outside it. His pitch is investment, jobs and modernised public services, the language of economic transformation rather than political survival. Analysts are sceptical. Converting commercial success into votes in a system built on clan networks and regional power brokers is a different skill set entirely, and Fiqi has yet to prove he has it.

What the Next President Will Actually Inherit

Whoever wins steps into a nightmare, and they should go in with their eyes open. Al-Shabaab remains a lethal and adaptive insurgency that controls significant territory and continues to carry out devastating attacks. Constitutional reforms that have been promised for years remain incomplete, leaving the legal foundations of the Somali state perpetually unfinished. Corruption is not a peripheral problem — it is structural, embedded in the institutions that are supposed to fight it. And the relationship between the federal government and Somalia’s regional administrations is fractious at best, openly hostile at worst, which means the next president will spend enormous political capital just trying to keep the country’s own components from pulling apart.

Political analyst Musa Ahmed put it plainly: “This is the most crucial moment in Somalia’s transition. The next president must unite the country, strengthen federal institutions and deliver security and economic opportunity beyond political interests.” That is not rhetoric. That is a job description that would exhaust any leader, and it is the reality waiting for whichever of these four men wins.

The race is on. Pay attention.

Somalia is about to choose its next president, and the stakes could not be higher.
