Let that image sit with you for a moment. Ordinary Kenyans, not police, not politicians, stood between democracy and chaos. That moment was both inspiring and deeply alarming — and it tells you everything about where we are headed if we don’t act now.

The Ol Kalou by-election was not an isolated incident. It was a dress rehearsal. A preview of what the General Elections could look like if Kenyans continue to outsource the responsibility of peace to the very leaders who profit from division.

Stop Waiting for Leaders to Save You

Here is the hard truth: the political class, whether in power or still campaigning, has no real incentive to prioritise your safety over their ambition. Peace does not win primaries. Violence, or at least the threat of it, consolidates bases, suppresses turnout in rival strongholds, and keeps communities too afraid to demand accountability. Franklin Mukembu is right when he says peace must become everyone’s responsibility — before, during, and after elections.

Young Kenyans especially cannot afford to be passive spectators. You are the demographic most likely to be recruited as political foot soldiers, most likely to be in the streets when things go wrong, and most likely to bear the economic cost of post-election instability. The stakes are personal, not abstract.

A Country Where Profits Beat Lives

The election violence story does not exist in isolation. It sits inside a broader Kenyan pattern where human life is routinely subordinated to convenience and profit. Near Eland Academy in Kericho, construction workers on the Boma Yangu project were spotted working at dangerous heights without basic safety precautions — one slip away from death, with no intervention from the contractor. The question Mista Nyambati asks is the right one: why does it take a tragedy to trigger action in this country?

The same logic applies to electoral violence. We know the warning signs. We have seen this script before, in 2007, in 2017, in every contested by-election since. Yet the preventive infrastructure — community peace committees, credible security deployment, transparent electoral processes — remains an afterthought until bodies are on the ground.

Security Failures Are Not Footnotes

When two murder suspects walked out of a Mombasa police station, it reminded Evans Macharia Mwangi of a promise the Interior CS made about installing CCTV systems in all police stations. That promise, like so many others, appears to have evaporated. A state that cannot secure its own facilities cannot credibly claim it will secure your polling station on election day.

This matters because electoral violence does not only happen in the open. It is enabled by institutional rot — by police who look away, by suspects who escape, by accountability systems that exist on paper and nowhere else.

There Is Still a Blueprint Worth Building On

Not everything is bleak. Murang’a County under Governor Irungu Kang’ata is actively courting investors and building economic incentives that could reduce the desperation that makes young men vulnerable to political mobilisation. Douglas Wahome is correct that county-level industrialisation, if done seriously, could be genuinely transformative. Economic agency is one of the most effective vaccines against political violence.

But one county’s ambition cannot substitute for a national commitment to peaceful elections. The work ahead is collective, urgent, and non-negotiable. Kenya has been here before and paid a catastrophic price. The residents of Ol Kalou already know what is at stake — the rest of the country needs to catch up fast.

This Is Not Someone Else’s Fight On July 16, 2026, residents of Ol Kalou armed themselves with whatever they had and chased away vehicles carrying hooded gunmen who attempted to storm a polling station at AC Primary School.
