Again. Ywaya Tajiri’s “Chai ya Saa Kumi” has become the soundtrack of the city’s June 2026, clinching the title of Nairobi’s most-streamed song for the month according to fresh Spotify data. This is not a fluke driven by industry machinery or label muscle. This is a song that crawled out of TikTok comment sections and into the collective consciousness of a generation that decides what’s hot before the radio does.

Released on February 23, 2026, the four-minute Afro-pop single was written and performed by Ywaya Tajiri, produced, mixed and mastered by Hendrick Sam, with Bobo lending backing vocals. It dropped under the Watendawili imprint and spent months building quietly — the way a fire does before it consumes everything around it. Then TikTok happened. Short-form videos began using the track as background audio, and the algorithm did the rest, turning a steady simmer into a full boil. The numbers that followed are the kind that make label executives rethink their entire A&R strategy.

6,151 Per Cent. Read That Again.

Spotify’s data shows Ywaya Tajiri recorded a 6,151 per cent year-on-year growth among Nairobi listeners aged 18 to 24. That is not a typo, and it is not a rounding error. That is the sound of a generation making an active, deliberate choice about who they want to listen to — and it has nothing to do with what a gatekeeper told them to stream. For young, politically engaged Kenyans who have grown up watching institutions fail them and official narratives crumble, the idea that an artist can bypass the old power structures and build a massive audience on sheer relatability feels deeply, personally satisfying.

And Ywaya is not alone in this surge. The Spotify data reveals a cohort of emerging artists posting growth figures that should make every established act pay attention. OnlyMoh grew by 5,117 per cent, Virusi Mbaya by 4,692 per cent, Codey by 3,622 per cent, and JayLo by 3,015 per cent. Even artists like Brandy Maina and Maandy — posting 205 per cent and 201 per cent respectively — are proof that the pipeline of new Kenyan talent is not a trickle. It is a flood. These are not artists riding a viral moment; they are building audiences at a speed that suggests something structural has shifted in how young Kenyans discover and consume music.

This Is Not a Changing of the Guard — It’s an Expansion

Here is where the story gets genuinely interesting, because the easy narrative — that new artists are eating the lunch of established ones — turns out to be wrong. The data tells a more nuanced, and frankly more hopeful, story. Sauti Sol, still on hiatus as a group, remained the most-streamed Kenya-connected artist in Nairobi during June while still posting 30 per cent annual growth. Think about that: a group that is not actively releasing music as a unit is still the city’s dominant streaming force, and still growing. That is the definition of a legacy that compounds.

The established names are not being swept aside — they are finding new rooms to occupy. Prince Indah recorded 221 per cent growth among 18 to 24-year-old listeners. Nyashinski grew 147 per cent in the same demographic. Bridget Blue posted 140 per cent, Kinoti hit 107 per cent, and Nikita Kering’ reached 96 per cent. These are artists who have been in the game long enough to have a back catalogue, and young Nairobi is digging into it. Agnes Opondo, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for East Africa, put it plainly: “Discovery isn’t replacing legacy; it’s expanding it.” She is right, and that matters enormously for what Kenyan music looks like over the next decade.

Why This Moment Belongs to You

The Spotify data lands at a pointed moment — the streaming giant is currently hosting its Greasy Tunes festival in Nairobi, a 12-day celebration spanning music, fashion, food, podcasts and community experiences. The festival brings together breakthrough artists and household names under one roof, which is essentially a live-action version of what the streaming data is already telling us: young Kenyan fans are not choosing between the new and the established. They are claiming both. They are building a music culture that is expansive rather than exclusionary, and they are doing it on their own terms, through their own playlists, their own TikTok pages, their own group chats.

This is what makes “Chai ya Saa Kumi” more than a hit song. It is evidence of agency. A young artist, a sharp producer, a TikTok trend, and an audience that was ready — no major label co-sign required, no radio gatekeeper needed. For every young Kenyan who has ever made something and wondered whether the system would ever let them through, Ywaya Tajiri’s 6,151 per cent growth is the answer they were waiting for. The system didn’t let him through. He walked around it entirely. And Nairobi pressed play.

The Song That Took Over Nairobi’s Earphones Picture this: it’s four minutes past ten in the morning — saa kumi, in Swahili time — and somewhere across Nairobi, someone is pressing replay.
