The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, known as KNCCI, is organising the event, and it carries the backing of 63 chambers of commerce spread across the continent. That’s not a small footnote \u2014 that’s a coalition that signals real institutional weight behind this gathering.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Think about what it means for Nairobi to host this. Kenya has long positioned itself as East Africa’s commercial nerve centre, but that status is not guaranteed forever. Cities like Kigali, Addis Ababa, and even Dar es Salaam are aggressively competing for the same investment conversations, the same regional headquarters, the same seat at the table. Every summit of this scale that lands in Nairobi is a statement \u2014 a declaration that this city still commands respect on the continental stage. But a statement only holds if it’s backed by substance.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The core conversation driving ACIS 2026 centres on intra-Africa trade, and this is where it gets personal. Africa currently trades more with Europe and Asia than it does with itself. The African Continental Free Trade Area \u2014 AfCFTA \u2014 promised to change that, creating the world’s largest free trade zone by number of countries. Yet the gap between the agreement on paper and the reality on the ground remains embarrassingly wide. Bureaucratic bottlenecks, poor infrastructure, currency conversion headaches, and a persistent colonial-era mindset that looks outward for markets rather than inward \u2014 these are the walls that summits like ACIS are supposed to help tear down.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Young Kenyans building businesses right now are living inside this contradiction every day. A Nairobi-based tech entrepreneur trying to sell software to a client in Lagos faces more friction than one selling to a buyer in London. A fashion designer in Westlands shipping garments to Accra navigates customs processes that were designed to frustrate, not facilitate.
