Africa is cannibalising its own future. Rising xenophobia, political nationalism and geopolitical fractures are no longer just social problems \u2014 they are now documented threats to investment, expansion and economic survival across the continent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
That is the hard truth emerging from MTN Ghana’s latest results. CEO Stephen Blewett didn’t mince words: conflicts in the Middle East, supply chain disruptions and growing trade fragmentation are actively undermining economic gains in Ghana \u2014 even as domestic conditions improve. When one of Africa’s most powerful telecoms giants flags xenophobia and anti-foreign sentiment as material business risks in its financial results, you stop and listen. This isn’t abstract. This is money walking out the door.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Victor Kgomoeswana, author of Africa Bounces Back<\/em> and Marketing and Communication Executive Director at the University of Limpopo, puts it plainly. Anti-immigration movements create real reputational and regulatory backlash for multinationals. “I’m in marketing, I deal with perception and I know often perception matters more than fact,” he told Stephen Grootes on The Money Show. “We are going to have to do a lot of damage control on the basis of the anti illegal immigration.” Perception, once poisoned, is expensive to detoxify. Investors don’t wait around for the antidote.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Here is the mechanism that should concern every young Kenyan watching their job market, their startup ecosystem, their country’s growth trajectory. Heightened xenophobia and political nationalism increase regulatory risk. They delay capital investment. They fracture supply chains and corrode consumer confidence. Every one of those outcomes raises the cost of doing business \u2014 and when the cost rises high enough, investors don’t negotiate, they leave. They demand higher risk premiums, or they simply redirect capital to more stable markets. The jobs that never materialise, the factories that never open, the tech hubs that never get funded \u2014 these are the invisible casualties of visible hatred.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Kgomoeswana acknowledges the political reality. “The March and March movement, the anti-illegal immigration did have some backlash,” he says, “but you don’t take on an MTN and throw it out of the country because of that.” True. But the damage doesn’t require expulsion. It only requires enough uncertainty to make a CFO in London or Nairobi or Lagos hesitate before signing off on the next round of continental expansion. Hesitation, at scale, is devastating.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The timing could not be worse. Africa is in the middle of building the African Continental Free Trade Area \u2014 the AfCFTA \u2014 arguably the most ambitious economic integration project in the continent’s post-independence history. The entire premise of AfCFTA rests on open borders, predictable policy environments and cross-border trust. Xenophobia is a direct attack on every one of those pillars. You cannot build a continental single market while simultaneously stoking fear of the foreigner next door. The contradiction is not sustainable, and the economic cost of that contradiction falls hardest on young people \u2014 the majority demographic in virtually every African country \u2014 who inherit the stagnation that follows.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n This is not a distant South African problem or a Ghanaian problem. Kenya has its own history of ethnic and xenophobic tension. It has its own political entrepreneurs who profit from painting outsiders as threats. And it sits at the heart of East African regional integration, making it both a potential beneficiary of continental openness and a potential casualty of continental dysfunction. The question for young, politically engaged Kenyans is not whether this affects them. It does. The question is whether they are willing to call out the nationalism that masquerades as patriotism \u2014 and demand that their leaders build an Africa that is genuinely open for business, for all of us.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Africa is cannibalising its own future.
