She was shot and killed in Nairobi, and the investigation into her murder is now pulling in an entire family, a stolen fleet of cars, a disputed billion-shilling piece of land, and the ghost of a marriage that ended over two decades ago. This is not a simple crime story. It is a story about what happens when wealth, legal manipulation, and personal vendetta collide \u2014 and when the system that was supposed to protect someone fails them, fatally.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
On July 7, 2026, Dr Mutiso was driving along Ngong Road near Junction Mall when two men on a motorcycle allegedly drew a gun on her. She escaped that day. She reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station and told investigators \u2014 and her husband, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei \u2014 that she had recognised the pillion passenger. She named him as Chris Mulwa<\/strong>. Weeks later, she was dead.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The suspects currently detained are Rose Mbithe Mulwa<\/strong>, her son Chris Mulwa<\/strong>, her daughter Angella Mulwa<\/strong>, and alleged gunman Nelson Masiga Makaralu<\/strong>. The Mulwa family connection to this case runs deep and personal: Rose Mbithe Mulwa is the former wife of Prof David Ndetei, Dr Mutiso’s husband. The two divorced in 2001 after having four children together. Chris Mulwa is one of those children.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n On Monday, a Nairobi court ordered Rose and Chris to remain in custody for 21 days, ruling that there is a real risk of witness interference if they are released. Rose is being held at Kileleshwa Police Station; Chris at Kilimani. Meanwhile, at Mavoko Law Courts, Principal Magistrate Lilian Nyabando directed that Angella Mulwa \u2014 a practising advocate of the High Court of Kenya \u2014 and Nelson Masiga remain in custody until Tuesday, August 4, 2026, pending a ruling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ application to detain them for 21 days.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Four people. One family. One dead woman. The geometry of this case is not accidental.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Everything, it seems. At the centre of this case is a 20-acre parcel of land in Mlolongo, Athi River<\/strong>, valued at approximately Sh1.5 billion. Rose Mbithe Mulwa had filed a suit against Dr Mutiso at the High Court over this property \u2014 a case that was still active when Dr Mutiso was killed. Detectives are now examining whether an eviction order that Rose presented to officers at Mlolongo Police Station was genuine or fraudulently obtained, because what followed that eviction was devastating.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Dr Mutiso had reported to Mlolongo Police Station on May 4, 2026, that several of her properties had been stolen while others were destroyed. Six cars vanished from her home during the confrontation. A Range Rover belonging to her husband, Prof Ndetei, was later found at the Karen home of Angella Mulwa and has since been towed away by detectives. Investigators now suspect that one of the other missing vehicles \u2014 a Toyota Prado \u2014 is the same car used to intercept Dr Mutiso shortly before she was shot dead.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n After the demolition of her property, Dr Mutiso lodged a formal complaint alleging trespass, malicious damage to property, and theft. She called for a criminal investigation. No arrest was made. She was killed anyway.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n This is the part that should make every young Kenyan paying attention sit up straight. Angella Mulwa<\/strong>, the second-born daughter of Rose Mbithe Mulwa, is a trained advocate with 26 years of practice behind her. She is not being investigated for the shooting itself \u2014 at least not directly. Detectives from the Athi River DCI office are probing her for the alleged theft of title documents related to the same Sh1.5 billion Mlolongo land, as well as alleged land fraud.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Her defence counsel, Cliff Ombeta, pushed back hard in court, arguing that the entire dispute arose from a land matter in which lawful eviction orders had been issued and executed, and that his client’s long career as an advocate speaks for itself. But the prosecution is not backing down. The DCI wants 21 days to trace the ownership and movement of multiple vehicles, establish their connection to the killing, and complete a probe that now spans two police stations, multiple court filings, and what could be a coordinated criminal enterprise hiding behind legal paperwork.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Possibly. Detectives have widened the probe to examine whether Dr Mutiso’s killing is connected to the murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu<\/strong>, who was shot dead along Magadi Road in September 2025. No confirmed link has been established yet, but the fact that investigators are even asking the question tells you something about the scale of what they think they may be looking at.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n What is already confirmed is damning enough: a woman reported being targeted on Ngong Road, named her attacker, filed complaints about stolen property, sought police intervention \u2014 and received none of it in time. The system had multiple opportunities to intervene before Dr Mutiso was killed. It did not.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The courts will now decide whether the four suspects remain in custody long enough for investigators to piece together the full picture. Tuesday’s ruling at Mavoko Law Courts is the next moment to watch.
