The Senate Majority Leader walked into Tharaka-Nithi country with a direct message for the Meru community: stop worrying about whether Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will be on the 2027 ticket. He will be. And if things go the way Cheruiyot sees it, Kindiki will be sitting in State House by 2032.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
That’s not a whisper from a backroom operative. That’s a public declaration from one of President William Ruto’s most trusted allies, delivered at a cultural festival near Meru National Park \u2014 an audience that knows exactly what’s at stake for their region.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
To understand why Cheruiyot had to say this at all, you need to remember what happened. In 2022, UDA party delegates had already picked Kindiki as Ruto’s running mate. Then Rigathi Gachagua pushed his way into the slot. Kindiki stepped aside. Mt Kenya East watched someone from the West claim a position that had been theirs. Then, in a dramatic turn, Gachagua was impeached \u2014 and Kindiki finally got the seat he was originally meant to hold.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
That history matters. It’s why people in Meru and Tharaka-Nithi are not simply taking political promises at face value. They’ve been here before. They’ve seen deals collapse. Cheruiyot knows this, which is exactly why he chose to be blunt rather than diplomatic.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
“Do not be stressed about whether President Ruto will pick Prof Kindiki. He has delivered,” Cheruiyot told the crowd.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
No caveats. No “we hope” or “we believe.” Just a flat assertion designed to cut through the anxiety that has been building in the region.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
What makes Cheruiyot’s speech genuinely significant is that he went further than reassurance. He named the political debt openly. Mt Kenya West, he argued, should now back Mt Kenya East’s bid for national leadership \u2014 because East has historically delivered votes for West’s candidates. Ruto himself is from the Rift Valley, but the Mt Kenya West bloc has long been the gravitational centre of Gikuyu political power. Cheruiyot is telling them: you owe the East this one.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
This kind of transactional honesty is rare in Kenyan political discourse, where regional solidarity is usually dressed up in the language of unity and development. Cheruiyot stripped that pretence away.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Tharaka-Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya reinforced the message, urging the Ameru to fully back the Ruto-Kindiki ticket in 2027 and pointing to ongoing projects \u2014 roads, water infrastructure, markets, the Affordable Housing Programme \u2014 as evidence that the partnership is already paying off.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Whether you buy the development narrative or not \u2014 and skeptics have every right to interrogate which projects are actually complete versus which are still “in the pipeline” \u2014 the political architecture Cheruiyot is building is real and it is deliberate. Mt Kenya East is being mobilised early, and the message is being delivered not through party memos but through cultural festivals, in front of communities that have long felt like supporting actors in someone else’s political drama.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
