There is a quiet lie that Kenyan politics has told for generations: that age equals wisdom, that grey hair means good governance, and that young people should wait their turn. It has never been true. But it has been useful \u2014 useful to those already holding power, already drawing salaries from the public purse, already deciding who gets a seat at the table and who stands outside.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Development finance expert Macharia Kihuro is challenging that lie directly. His argument is simple and devastating: leadership is not a function of birth year.<\/strong> Kenya keeps recycling the same faces, the same families, the same tired political dynasties \u2014 and then acts surprised when the results are the same.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Think back to the early years of this republic. The founding generation was, by today’s standards, remarkably young. Tom Mboya was negotiating Kenya’s future on international stages before he turned thirty. Bildad Kaggia was organising workers and demanding land rights while his peers were still finding their footing. These were not men who waited for permission. They saw a crisis, they understood it, and they moved.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Decades passed, and somewhere along the way, the political culture calcified. The argument shifted from what can you do<\/em> to how long have you been around<\/em>. Experience became a gatekeeping tool rather than a genuine qualification. Young Kenyans \u2014 educated, connected, furious at the state of their country \u2014 were told to observe, to learn, to be patient. The country needed them quiet, not capable.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n By the time the Gen Z protests of 2024 erupted across Nairobi and beyond, it was clear that patience had run out. Young Kenyans were not asking for permission anymore. They were occupying parliament buildings, drafting policy critiques on X, and doing it all without a single elder statesman telling them it was okay to be angry. The establishment called it chaos. What it actually was, was competence in a form the old guard had never seen and could not control.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The official narrative, predictably, tried to delegitimise it. Protesters were called naive, foreign-funded, easily manipulated \u2014 anything to avoid engaging with the substance of what they were saying. But young Kenyans who watched that moment know what they saw. They saw their peers read finance bills line by line. They saw crowd-sourced legal analysis. They saw organisation without hierarchy. The maturity was there. The establishment simply refused to recognise it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n This is the core of Kihuro’s argument, and it lands hard: Kenya cannot afford to keep mistaking longevity for leadership.<\/strong> A sixty-year-old who has spent three decades protecting personal interests is not more qualified than a thirty-year-old who understands public debt, climate finance, and digital infrastructure. Age is not the variable. Commitment, competence, and accountability are.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Other countries have already figured this out. Ethiopia appointed Sahle-Work Zewde. Finland elected Sanna Marin at thirty-four. Chile put Gabriel Boric in power at thirty-five. These were not experiments or accidents \u2014 they were deliberate choices made by electorates that decided results mattered more than r\u00e9sum\u00e9s built over decades of doing very little.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Kenya is not short of young people with the skills to lead. It is short of a political culture willing to let them. The barriers are structural \u2014 nomination processes controlled by party elders, campaign finance requirements that price out anyone without inherited wealth, and a media landscape that treats youth as a liability rather than an asset. Dismantling those barriers is not a favour to young people. It is a survival strategy for the country.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The question is not whether Kenya’s young generation is ready. That question was answered in June 2024, on the streets and online, in real time, under real pressure. The real question is whether the people currently in power are ready to stop pretending that holding on is the same as leading forward. It is not.
