Because the same institutions that lecture Africa about accountability and the rule of law just refused, on the record, to hold their own ally accountable for killing their own citizens.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The resolution, pushed by Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, was not radical. It asked the State Department to report to Congress on the killing of US citizens by Israeli settlers or Israeli security forces in the West Bank, and to assess the broader human rights situation there. That’s it. A report. The Senate voted 47 to 51 to kill even that.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The vote split almost perfectly along party lines. Every Republican voted no \u2014 except Rand Paul of Kentucky, who has long been the party’s odd conscience on foreign policy. Every Democrat voted yes \u2014 except John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who has staked his political identity on unconditional support for Israel. Two outliers. Everyone else followed the script.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Van Hollen had argued it was “long past time” to examine human rights in the West Bank, pointing to nine American deaths since 2022. “It is our responsibility,” he said, “to ensure recipients of US taxpayer dollars act in line with our laws and our values.” Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance since World War Two. That is not a small detail. That is the entire context.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank has risen sharply this year. The resolution would not have cut a single dollar of that aid. A failure to deliver the report could have triggered restrictions down the line \u2014 but that is a conditional, future consequence, not an immediate punishment. Republicans still said no.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Their reasoning? Montana’s Senator Steve Daines put it plainly: “I urge my colleagues to vote no on this resolution so we can stand with our ally Israel as they beat back the scourge of Iranian-backed terrorism.” Seven months after US and Israeli forces launched airstrikes that opened an ongoing conflict with Iran, the political calculus in Washington has hardened into something that looks less like foreign policy and more like tribal loyalty.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Netanyahu, who has spent years cultivating his alliance with US Republicans, faces an election on October 27 that polls suggest his right-wing coalition could lose. The timing of this Senate vote \u2014 weeks before US midterm elections on November 3, where polls show Republicans could lose their congressional majorities \u2014 is not incidental. Every vote right now is also a campaign message.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Americans themselves are not enthusiastic about this trajectory. Polls show the war with Iran is unpopular, driven in part by the frustration of higher energy prices hitting ordinary households. The gap between what Washington does and what Americans actually want is widening. That is a tension worth watching.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
For young Kenyans who have grown up being told that Western democracies represent the gold standard of governance \u2014 transparent, accountable, rules-based \u2014 this vote is a data point worth filing away. When accountability mechanisms are blocked not because they are wrong but because they are inconvenient, the system is not broken. It is working exactly as designed, for the people it was designed to serve.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
