What allegedly happened next is the kind of story that should make every Kenyan’s blood run cold, because it strips away any pretence that a police uniform means protection. According to Muturi and witnesses, the officers refused to drop the couple at their destination and instead demanded Ksh.1,000<\/strong> for the ride \u2014 a ride the officers themselves had offered. When Muturi insisted on getting out, he was allegedly thrown from the moving vehicle. The officers apparently assumed he was dead. A short distance later, they allegedly threw his pregnant wife, Catherine, out as well. She died on the spot. Her baby died with her.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The community of Mugamba Ciura did not quietly absorb this. Residents flooded onto the Piai-South Ngariama road<\/strong>, blocked it entirely, and physically chased away the police vehicle that arrived to collect Catherine’s body \u2014 the same institution that had just killed her coming to manage the aftermath. Pastor Ephantus Mwangi, who spoke for the community with raw, unfiltered fury, demanded the arrest of both the driver and the officer riding in the back. Former Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri<\/strong> stood alongside residents and warned authorities plainly: if the officers are not arrested, residents will storm the police station themselves. This was not a crowd asking politely for accountability. This was a community that has had enough.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n What makes this worse \u2014 and what the official narrative will likely try to bury \u2014 is that this was not an isolated incident. Resident Alfred Muthomi<\/strong> testified that the same vehicle had previously picked him and others up, then demanded Ksh.500 for the privilege. These officers were running an extortion racket from a government vehicle, in uniform, at night, on roads where ordinary Kenyans have no recourse and no witnesses. Catherine and Anthony were not unlucky. They were targeted by a system that has normalised this abuse so thoroughly that it happens in the early hours of the morning without hesitation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Detectives from Wang’uru Police Station eventually processed the scene, documenting injuries to Catherine’s forehead and right hip. Her body was moved to Embu Hospital Mortuary<\/strong>. Muturi was hospitalised. The two officers responsible are, at the time of writing, still being “sought.” DCI Veronica Kapoko and Wang’uru Base Commander Jamilah Murugu managed to calm the crowd by promising stern action \u2014 a promise Kenyans have heard before, and learned, painfully, not to trust without pressure. The road reopened. The system exhaled. But Catherine Mwende Njeru and her unborn child are still dead, and the officers who allegedly killed them are still free. That is the story.
