Edwin Sifuna is done playing nice. The Nairobi Senator and presidential aspirant stood before mourners at Sipala Primary School in Mihuu Ward, Webuye East Constituency, Bungoma County last Saturday \u2014 a requiem mass for the daughter of area MCA Violet Namaemba Makhanu \u2014 and turned what could have been a solemn occasion into a full-throated political declaration. He didn’t come to comfort. He came to fight.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The confrontation didn’t start in Bungoma. It started when President William Ruto publicly branded Sifuna an extortionist, accusing him of using Senate committee appearances to harass governors. That accusation landed. And Sifuna, never one to absorb a punch without throwing one back, decided the only fitting response was to drag the President’s entire record into the open and dare him to compare notes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
“Alisimama akasema mimi ni extortionist,” Sifuna told the crowd, recounting Ruto’s attack before pivoting sharply. “Sasa ata mimi nasema yeye ni extortionist. Kama ni track record, wacha tuchore lines mbili ya Sifuna vs Ruto.” Two lines. One comparison. Let Kenyans decide. It was a clean, surgical challenge \u2014 the kind that forces your opponent to either engage or look like they’re hiding something.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
But Sifuna didn’t stop at the draw. He went further, accusing Ruto of being a land thief, a money thief, and \u2014 invoking the President’s past case at the International Criminal Court \u2014 a killer. “Yeye ni muuaji alitumwa mpaka ICC kwa makosa ya ujinai, kunajisi kina mama na kuchoma watu kwa kanisa,” he said, his words cutting through any pretence of diplomatic restraint. This was not a policy debate. This was a reckoning. Sifuna laid out the full charge sheet: corruption, the killing of Gen Z protesters, broken promises, and a presidency that has consistently failed ordinary Kenyans.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Sifuna also used the platform to push back hard against critics who have dismissed his Linda Mwananchi movement as politically disorganised and intellectually hollow. The mockery has been real \u2014 opposition figures and government allies alike have questioned whether The Equitable Party (TEP) has the structure, the agenda, or the reach to mount a credible 2027 challenge. Sifuna’s answer was blunt and unapologetic. “I stand here as your party leader,” he said, before taking a direct shot at Musalia Mudavadi, accusing the Prime Cabinet Secretary of laziness. “Before elections, Linda Mwananchi itakuwa kwa kila nyumba Kenya hii.” Every house. That is the ambition. That is the promise.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
He made clear that unity within the opposition is not optional \u2014 it is the strategy. Sifuna declared that he would sit down with every opposition leader, no exceptions, to forge a single, dangerous coalition capable of sending Ruto home. “Hakuna kiongozi yeyote kwa opposition sitaketi naye ndio tuunde kikosi kimoja hatari,” he said, with the kind of certainty that either signals genuine resolve or a very convincing performance of it. Given the political stakes heading into 2027, the distinction matters enormously.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Then came the moment that stung the most \u2014 not the attack on Ruto, but the quiet devastation aimed at the Orange Democratic Movement. Sifuna revealed that ODM’s entire leadership was absent from the first anniversary memorial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the man they spent years claiming as their closest ally and political father. “Iliniuma sana kwamba uongozi mzima wa ODM haukuja kumkumbuka Raila,” he said, his disappointment barely contained. The question he posed was devastating in its simplicity: if you can’t show up after one year, what happens after ten?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
It’s a question that cuts to the heart of Kenyan political loyalty \u2014 a commodity that has always been transactional, always conditional, and almost never genuine. Sifuna knows this. He’s betting that young, politically aware Kenyans know it too, and that they’re tired of watching leaders perform grief and solidarity for cameras while abandoning the very movements and people they built their careers on.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Sifuna saved a particular kind of contempt for what he described as the President’s habit of mimicking his political messaging. When Sifuna launched The Equitable Party \u2014 Chama cha Usawa \u2014 Ruto, he claimed, almost immediately began using the word “usawa” in his own public appearances. “Anatuita hatuna akili lakini anacopy kila sisi tunafanya,” Sifuna said, with the satisfaction of a man who knows that imitation, in politics, is the sincerest form of threat acknowledgment. If the President didn’t see Sifuna as a real danger, he wouldn’t be watching this closely.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Beyond the personal theatre, Sifuna and allied leaders have raised substantive questions about government accountability over public assets including Nzoia Sugar Company and Pan Paper Mills \u2014 institutions that matter deeply to the communities in western Kenya where Sifuna is building his base. The administration, he insists, must answer for what has happened to these assets on its watch. The 2027 showdown is still two years away.
