While most Kenyans were watching the Safari Rally from the sidelines, Pauline Sheghu was behind the wheel — competing, finishing, and doing it again. Now, the continent has taken notice. Sheghu has been named among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Women for 2026, ahead of the fifth African Women Awards set for November 20 in Nairobi. This is not a participation trophy. This is a reckoning with what one woman has built, race by race, year by year.

Sheghu occupies a rare dual identity in Kenya’s professional landscape. By day, she serves as Corporate Communications Manager at the Geothermal Development Company (GDC). On rally weekends, she straps into a car and competes in one of the most physically and mentally demanding motorsport events on the planet. Neither role is a hobby. Both demand total commitment.

What makes her story genuinely historic is what she and co-driver Linnet Ayuko accomplished together: they became the first all-female Kenyan team to complete three consecutive editions of the World Rally Championship Safari Rally, doing so between 2023 and 2025. Three years. Three completions. In a sport where the attrition rate is brutal and the terrain is unforgiving, finishing once is an achievement. Finishing three times in a row is a statement.

The African Women Awards is a continental platform that identifies and celebrates women whose leadership reshapes industries and communities. It connects honourees through the SHE Achievers Network, creating pathways for collaboration, business and mentorship across Africa. Sheghu will receive a commemorative plaque and certificate at a red-carpet gala ceremony — but the real weight of this recognition sits far beyond the event itself.

She dedicated the honour to “women who dare to dream, challenge the status quo and create opportunities for others to succeed.” That is not a press-release phrase. Coming from someone who has navigated the overwhelmingly male world of Kenyan motorsport while holding down a senior corporate role, those words carry lived weight.

Here is the key takeaway the official narrative will gloss over: Sheghu did not get here because the system made it easy. Motorsport in Kenya — and across Africa — is expensive, male-dominated and historically indifferent to women’s participation. Sheghu and Ayuko built their legacy against that current, not with it.

The fifth African Women Awards is expected to draw women leaders, diplomats, business executives, entrepreneurs and former heads of state from across the continent. Sheghu will stand among them — not as an outlier, but as proof that the road to influence can run through a rally stage in the Kenyan bush.

If you are a young Kenyan watching from the margins of any field that tells you there is no seat at the table, Sheghu’s trajectory is the counter-argument. She did not wait for motorsport to become welcoming. She did not wait for corporate Kenya to hand her visibility. She competed, completed and kept showing up until the continent had to pay attention.

That is the story. And it is worth more than a plaque.

She Didn’t Wait for Permission While most Kenyans were watching the Safari Rally from the sidelines, Pauline Sheghu was behind the wheel — competing, finishing, and doing it again.
