The groundwork laid ahead of this visit tells you everything you need to know about where Ruto actually stands in the region. His allies, led by National Assembly Majority Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro, North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, and a cluster of other legislators including Jerusha Momanyi, Doris Donya, and Dr Daniel Manduku, have been running public meetings stacked with handouts and political persuasion. The Solicitor General himself, Shadrack Mose, has been deployed to market government projects to residents. When you send your Solicitor General on a charm offensive, you are not projecting strength.<\/p>\n
The numbers from 2022 are the brutal context here. Ruto pulled roughly 35 per cent of the Gusii vote in the last election, while the late Raila Odinga walked away with 65 per cent. That is not a competitive result. That is a region that looked at Ruto and said, clearly, no. And now, with former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i positioning himself as a Jubilee Party presidential aspirant with deep roots and genuine influence across Gusii, analysts are already predicting that Ruto’s share of those votes will shrink further before 2027.<\/p>\n
Beautah Omanga, a former Bogichora MCA, did not mince words. “What the President should be made to understand is that the only people who are with him are the leaders from Gusii who are with him for personal convenience. Otherwise, he should count the region among his depressed grounds.” That is a devastating assessment, and it rings true precisely because it aligns with what the numbers already show.<\/p>\n
Nyamoko, to his credit, is at least honest about the transactional logic driving his alignment with State House. “You cannot ignore the government because everything the people want comes from it,” he said. He framed his proximity to Ruto as a deliberate choice to secure development for his constituents. That is a rational calculation. It is also a confession that loyalty here is conditional, not ideological, and the moment the calculus shifts, so will the allegiance.<\/p>\n
The projects being paraded before Gusii voters are real, and that matters. The proposed Standard Gauge Railway passing through Magwagwa in Nyamira, the Kisii Regional Cancer Centre, the upgrading of Kisii Airstrip, the construction of Nyamira University currently sitting at 60 per cent completion, affordable housing units, road upgrades and rural electrification are not small things. Roads get commissioned, hospitals get built, and people notice. Ruto is betting that tangible infrastructure can shift sentiment in ways that speeches cannot.<\/p>\n
His itinerary is dense with exactly that logic. He is expected to attend a church service at Matongo ELCK Church in Nyamira County before commissioning the Tombe-Isinta-Gitaru Road and launching the upgrading of the Bondeni-Magombo and Machururiati-Esani roads to bitumen status. He will also inspect the ongoing works at Gusii Stadium, a project he personally promised would be complete by December this year. That promise is now a public test he cannot quietly walk away from.<\/p>\n
Here is the uncomfortable truth sitting underneath all of this. Ruto is not visiting Gusii from a position of political confidence. He is visiting because he cannot afford to cede the region entirely to Matiang’i without a fight. Every road commissioned, every hospital inspected, every church service attended is a calculated deposit into an account that is currently deeply overdrawn. Whether Gusii voters will cash those deposits in his favour in 2027, or simply pocket the development and vote for someone else, is a question that no amount of groundwork can definitively answer right now.<\/p>\n
Young Kenyans watching this know what this visit really is. It is a powerful man reminding a region that the government controls the taps, and that turning against it has a cost.
