DCI lorry theft probe: Ex-Mwea MP arrested as stolen Isuzu trucks turn up in Mombasa

Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested five suspects, including former Mwea MP Peter Njuguna Gitau, over the theft of two Isuzu lorries stolen from Murang’a County. Detectives later recovered the vehicles in Mombasa after tracking the suspects through intelligence leads.

The DCI said the lorries were stolen in Gatanga on August 16, 2025. The agency identified them as an Isuzu FVZ (KDQ 845T) and an Isuzu FRR (KDL 078W).

DCI lorry theft: Five suspects named

Investigators said they arrested five suspects believed to have planned the theft. The DCI named them as Peter Njuguna Gitau, Mark Kinyua, Erick Chege, David Kigo and Joseph Ndung’u Waweru.

After the arrests, detectives questioned the suspects. As a result, the suspects led officers to Mombasa County, where the vehicles were recovered.

Trucks recovered in Makupa with fake number plates

The DCI said officers found both lorries in the Makupa area of Mombasa. However, the suspects had fitted them with counterfeit registration plates.

According to the agency, the Isuzu FVZ (KDQ 845T) carried a fake plate, KDV 449C. Meanwhile, the Isuzu FRR (KDL 078W) carried a fake plate, KCA 505D.

The DCI said it has secured the vehicles at DCI Gatanga. Next, it plans to return them to their owners.

Murang’a governor confirms county truck among recovered vehicles

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata said one of the recovered lorries belongs to the Murang’a County Government. He said the county uses it for garbage collection.

Kang’ata also noted that one suspect is a former Member of Parliament.

The DCI said the suspects remain in custody as officers complete processing ahead of arraignment.
