Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations has dismissed what it called misleading reports claiming Corporal James Muiruri Mburu died at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi. The agency said the officer died at his home in Ngong.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, February 23, 2026, the DCI said it was mourning the “tragic and untimely” death of the officer, who was attached to the DCI post in Kajiado North Subcounty.
What the DCI says happened in Ngong
According to the directorate, the incident happened in Ngong and the officer was taken to Ngong Level Four Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival, the DCI said.
The DCI also rejected claims circulating online about how he was found. It said the body was discovered by a neighbour’s house help, who found him lying unresponsive in his kitchen garden and raised the alarm.
The agency said three fellow officers responded and rushed him to hospital, but he did not survive.
The inquiry now points to possible electrocution
The directorate said the matter was formally reported at Ngong Police Station and a statement was recorded.
It added that during an earlier visit to the scene, Crime Scene Investigation officers and the Kenya Power and Lighting Company identified a live electrical wire beneath the surface of the garden.
The DCI said this discovery suggested the officer may have been electrocuted while working in the garden.
A postmortem examination has been scheduled to establish the exact cause of death, and an inquiry has been opened, the agency said.
A warning against speculation online
In its message, the DCI urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue. It also asked Kenyans to give the family privacy and dignity as they mourn.
The agency said it was standing with the officer’s relatives, friends and colleagues during what it described as a painful period
