A leading Kenyan mental health researcher was assassinated in broad daylight on a Tuesday morning in Nairobi — two shots to the head, a waiting motorcycle, a getaway car already in position. This was not random. Someone planned this meticulously, and the most disturbing detail is this: Dr Victoria Mutiso had already told police she was in danger.
Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health (AFRIMEB), was killed at approximately 9 a.m. at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road. She was riding in an Uber when a Toyota Prado — already parked and waiting — positioned itself beside her vehicle. Seconds later, a motorcycle carrying three men pulled up. One gunman fired twice into her head at close range, then the entire convoy vanished.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin says investigations are at an advanced stage. The Uber driver remains in custody for questioning. The assailants remain at large. Dr Mutiso’s body awaits a post-mortem at KNH mortuary.
Kenya has a pattern of burying inconvenient people and calling it a mystery. A woman who dedicated her career to mental health — a field the state barely funds and rarely champions — reported threats, followed the proper channels, and still ended up dead on a public road at nine in the morning.
